Does Vastu work in the UK?
Quick answer: Yes. Vastu works by direction, and directions are the same in the UK as in India. A UK compass is within about 2° of true north, so the bigger risks are estate-agent plans with no north arrow and British rooms the old texts never describe. Check north against a map of your street, then score the actual layout. What needs more care is the plan itself, because many estate-agent floor plans have no north arrow, and British homes have rooms the classical texts never described, such as conservatories, box rooms and loft conversions.
New to Vastu? What it is, in brief
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture and home layout, set out in Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara. It divides a home into eight directional zones around its centre and suggests which rooms and activities suit which zone. Many Indian families use it when they buy, build or arrange a home, and so do people of other backgrounds who are curious about how a home is laid out.

It is a cultural tradition, not a science, and it does not promise outcomes. Low winter sun, long summer evenings
The UK is much further north than India. In London the midday sun is only about 15° above the horizon in December and about 62° in June. It is always to the south at midday, so south-facing rooms get the most winter light, and a window facing north gets almost no direct sun between the autumn and spring equinoxes. These are measurements for each place, shown next to the Vastu reading, not Vastu rules.

British homes, read correctly
The report uses the names on your plan and reads them the way a home here is built:
Read as a garden room or outdoor area. Traditionally best: North, North-East or East.
Read as a small bedroom, or as a study if you name it so on the confirm screen. Each is scored by its direction.
Upload each floor on its own. Loft rooms are placed on the top floor and scored by direction like any other room.
An extension is part of the home outline, so it can move the centre of the home. The report finds the centre from the outline you confirm.
Read as a toilet or bathroom. The north-east and the centre of the home are the places tradition avoids.
Mark the outline of your own flat; its front door is your flat door, not the entrance to the building.
Terraced, semi-detached and detached houses
In a terraced house only the front and back walls are open, and a semi shares one side too. Vastu reads the layout inside your own walls, so a terrace is checked like any other home: where the front door sits on its wall (its pada), where the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms fall, and whether the centre of the home is kept open. The report does not mark a home down for its shared walls.
Compass vs true north in the UK
The UK has one of the smallest compass corrections of any country VastuIQ covers: within about 2° of true north everywhere, slightly east of it in most of England and Wales and slightly west of it in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Your score still uses the exact figure for your own town.

A south-facing garden, or a north-facing one?
UK buyers often look for a south-facing garden for the sun. Classical Vastu prefers more open space to the north and east of a home, and heavier, more closed sides to the south and west, which is close to the opposite. Neither decides on its own: the report scores your actual layout and shows the sun facts for your town beside the Vastu reading, so you can weigh both.
Leasehold flats, listed buildings and planning
If you own a leasehold flat, or your home is listed or in a conservation area, changes to the outside usually need permission. Choose Own it (building rules) in the tool: the report then leads with fixes inside the home and marks anything that touches the structure or the outside as "If renovating".
Buying in the UK: when to run the Vastu check
England, Wales and Northern Ireland. An accepted offer is not binding; the sale becomes legally binding only once contracts are signed by both sides (exchange of contracts in England and Wales). So the useful window is between your offer being accepted and exchange, the same time your survey and searches are done. Ask the agent for the floor plan on day one and run the free score before you pay for a survey, so a layout you would not live with is ruled out early.
Scotland. Most homes for sale come with a Home Report (a single survey, an energy report and a property questionnaire) before you offer, and a bargain becomes binding at the conclusion of missives, often quickly. Check the Vastu before you note interest or make an offer.
Renting. Check before you sign the tenancy; most fixes in the report are about how rooms are used, which suits renters.
New-build estates, plot numbers and mirror-image house types
On a new-build estate, the builder sells the same house type on many plots, often "handed" (a mirror image) and turned to face different directions. A brochure floor plan therefore tells you the layout but not your home's directions. Ask the sales office for the site plan with your plot number and its north arrow, check whether your plot is the handed version, and mark north on the plan before you upload it. On site, you can also find north with the Vastu Compass. Two neighbours with the same house type can get very different scores.

Vastu in the UK: questions people ask
When should I check Vastu when buying a house in England?
Between your offer being accepted and exchange of contracts. The sale is not legally binding until exchange, so a Vastu check done early, alongside the survey, can still change your decision.
Does a mirror-image (handed) house change the Vastu?
Yes, it can. A handed house has the same rooms on the opposite sides, so the kitchen or main bedroom can move into a different zone. Score your own plot's plan, with north marked from the site plan, not the brochure.
Is a north-facing garden good for Vastu?
Classical Vastu prefers more open space to the north and east of a home, so a north-facing garden fits that preference, even though UK buyers often prefer a south-facing garden for sun. The full layout still matters more than the garden alone.
Does Vastu work in the UK?
