    Does Vastu work in Fiji?

It can, as long as two Fiji-specific points are handled. The tradition works by direction, and north, east, south and west mean the same in Lautoka as in Lucknow. One point is the compass: it points about 13° east of true north in Suva and 13° east in Labasa, enough to move rooms near a zone boundary into the next zone. The other is the hemisphere: Fiji lies south of the equator, where the midday sun is in the north for most of the year, and practitioners are divided on whether north and south should trade places. Your score follows the classical directions with the compass corrected for your town, and the report adds the flipped view only for rooms where the two views differ sharply.

Do north and south swap in the Southern Hemisphere?

In India the midday sun is to the south. In Fiji it is to the north for most of the year (in Suva, all but about 76 days around December, when it passes just south of overhead). Classical Vastu was written north of the equator, and there is no single agreed answer on what that means here. Practitioners take three views:

What VastuIQ scoresKeep the classical directions

Directions are directions; a north-east kitchen means the same in Suva as in Delhi.

Shown beside your roomsFlip north and south

The midday sun is in the north in Fiji, so the roles of north and south should swap.

Shown as sun factsAdjust for the sun only

Keep the directions but read light and warmth from the local sun.

What VastuIQ does: the score follows the classical directions. Beside any room where the flipped view would change the reading by 25 points or more, the report shows that reading too. For example, a kitchen in the north-east scores 5 classically; in the flipped view it would read as south-east, which scores 100. You see both and decide.

    Fijian homes, read correctly

The report uses the names on your plan and reads them the way a home here is built:

    Veranda and porch

Read as outdoor areas. Traditionally best: North, North-East or East.

    Kitchen

Where the stove sits matters most. A cooking area outside the main house can be marked as a second kitchen. The classical choice: South-East, the zone traditionally linked with Agni (fire). North-West is the usual second choice.

    Prayer room and shrine

Read as a prayer space. Traditionally best: North-East (Ishanya), traditionally the most sacred zone.

    Master bedroom

Read as the main bedroom. Traditionally best: South-West, traditionally the zone of earth and stability, for the head of the household.

    Granny flat and extension

A separate flat, or an extension built for family, is checked on its own, with its own outline and its own door.

    Carport and garage

Read as parking. Traditionally best: North-West, traditionally the zone of movement (Vayu). South-East is also acceptable.

Inside the tropics, south of the equator

Fiji lies between the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn. In Suva the midday sun is about 85° high in December, just south of overhead for about 76 days around then, and about 48° high to the north in June. Daylight runs from about 11.0 hours in June to 13.2 in December.

76Days a year with the midday sun to the south, Suva
48°Midday sun in June, to the north
11.0–13.2 hDaylight, shortest to longest day

These are measurements, shown next to the Vastu reading, not Vastu rules. Fiji's cyclone season runs from November to April, and roofs, walls and shutters are a matter for your builder and engineer, not for Vastu. Nothing in the report involves structural work on a finished home: its fixes are about how rooms are used and arranged.

    Homes on leased land

Much of Fiji's land is iTaukei land, leased through the iTaukei Land Trust Board, and many homes, in the towns and on cane farms around Lautoka, Ba and Labasa, stand on leased or Crown land. The Vastu reading is the same whatever the tenure: it reads the house, its rooms and its main door. Before any building work, check what your lease allows; VastuIQ gives Vastu guidance only.

Compass vs true north in Fiji

Across Fiji a compass points about 12½–13° east of true north, slightly less on Vanua Levu than around Suva. Your score uses the exact figure for your own town.

New to Vastu? What it is, in brief

Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture and home layout, set out in Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara. It divides a home into eight directional zones around its centre and suggests which rooms and activities suit which zone. Many Indian families use it when they buy, build or arrange a home, and so do people of other backgrounds who are curious about how a home is laid out.

    North-east: open and light

Kept the lightest and least cluttered part of the home; a good place for prayer or quiet.

    South-east: the kitchen

The zone traditionally linked with Agni, fire, so it is the classical place for cooking.

    South-west: the main bedroom

Linked with weight and stability; tradition places the main bedroom and heavy storage here.

It is a cultural tradition, not a science, and it does not promise outcomes. VastuIQ shows what the classical texts recommend, measured accurately for your home and your city, and you decide what to do with it. Most of the report's fixes need no building work: they are about how rooms are used and arranged.

Vastu in Fiji: questions people ask

    Does Vastu work in Fiji?

Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, and they exist in Fiji as everywhere, so its guidance can be applied to a Fijian home. Two things need care: the compass correction of about 13° east, and the Southern Hemisphere question, on which practitioners disagree. VastuIQ corrects the compass for your town, follows the classical directions and shows the flipped reading where it changes a room a lot. Vastu is a tradition; it does not promise outcomes.

How far off is a compass in Suva, Nadi or Labasa?

About 13° east in Suva, 13° east in Nadi, 13° east in Lautoka and 13° east in Labasa (World Magnetic Model). Each Vastu zone is 45° wide, so a gap of 13° moves a wall or door near a zone boundary into the next zone. VastuIQ corrects every compass reading for your town.

Do north and south swap for Vastu in Fiji?

Opinion is split three ways: keep the classical directions; swap north and south because the sun stands in the northern sky here most of the year; or keep the directions and only weigh light and warmth. VastuIQ scores the classical directions. Where swapping would move a room's score by 25 points or more, the report prints that second reading next to it, and your family can choose which to follow.

Is a south-facing house bad in Fiji?

No. Tradition favours north- and east-facing entrances, but where the front door sits on its wall (its pada) and how the rooms are placed matter more than the facing alone. Separately from Vastu, the north side of a Fijian home gets the most sun for most of the year; the report shows this beside the Vastu reading.

My family has moved to Australia or New Zealand. Which page should we use?

Use the page for the country where the home stands: Australia or New Zealand for a home there, this page for a home in Fiji. Each corrects the compass for its own towns, and the Southern Hemisphere question is handled the same way on all three.

Can I compare homes or plans in Fiji?

Yes. Use Compare 2–3 homes: the side-by-side comparison is free, and Home Buyer Compare (US$79, about FJ$179) adds a PDF that ranks the homes and includes the full report for the one you choose.
