Does Vastu work in Malaysia?
Yes. Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, which are the same in Malaysia as in India, so its guidance applies to a terrace house in Petaling Jaya or a condo in Mont Kiara. The compass is almost exactly on true north here (within about 1° anywhere in Malaysia), so that correction is small. Two things matter more: Malaysia lies close to the equator, so the midday sun is high all year and on the north side of the sky for part of it, and Malaysian homes have rooms the classical texts never described, such as wet and dry kitchens and the car porch. Many buyers also weigh feng shui; the two are compared below.
Malaysian homes, read correctly
The report uses the names on your plan and reads them the way a home here is built:
Both are read as kitchens and each is scored by its own direction. Traditionally best for cooking: South-East, the zone traditionally linked with Agni (fire). North-West is the usual second choice.
Read as parking, part of the home's front. Traditionally best: North-West, traditionally the zone of movement (Vayu). South-East is also acceptable.
Read as a guest or staff bedroom. Traditionally best: North-West, the zone traditionally linked with Vayu (air) and movement.
Read as living rooms. Traditionally best: North, North-East or East.
Read as a prayer space. Traditionally best: North-East (Ishanya), traditionally the most sacred zone.
The store is read as storage and the yard as a utility area, each by its direction.
Vastu and feng shui: how they compare
Many homes in Malaysia are chosen with feng shui in mind, and many buyers know both traditions. They are separate systems, and VastuIQ reads Vastu only, but it helps to see where they meet and where they differ.
| Vastu Shastra | Feng shui | |
|---|---|---|
| Comes from | India: Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara | China: classical schools such as the Form school and the Compass school |
| What it reads | Eight directions around the centre of the home (the Brahmasthan) | The surroundings and landforms, and compass directions with the Bagua |
| Personal factors | The same directions for everyone in the home | Some schools add the occupants' birth year (Eight Mansions, the Kua number) or the building's age (Flying Stars) |
| Which north | VastuIQ uses true north, the geographic direction | Practitioners traditionally read a luopan, which is a magnetic compass |
| The main door | Its direction and its exact position on the wall (the pada) | Its facing direction and what it looks out on |
Where they usually agree: a clear, welcoming entrance, tidy and uncluttered rooms, and plenty of natural light. Where they differ, VastuIQ does not choose for you: the report gives the Vastu reading, and if you also follow feng shui you can weigh it alongside a feng shui practitioner's advice. In Malaysia a compass and true north are almost the same, so the "which north" difference makes no practical difference here.
Terrace (link) houses, semi-Ds and bungalows
In an intermediate terrace house only the front and back walls are open; an end or corner lot has a third open side, and a semi-D or bungalow more. Vastu reads the layout inside your own walls either way: where the main door sits on its wall (its pada), where the kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms fall, and whether the centre of the home is kept open. The report does not mark a home down for its shared walls.
The sun near the equator
Classical Vastu was written in India, where the midday sun is always to the south. Malaysia lies just north of the equator, so the sun is high at midday all year: in Kuala Lumpur about 63° above the horizon to the south in December, and about 70° to the north in June. It is on the north side of the sky for about 170 days a year.
VastuIQ keeps the classical directions here, because Malaysia is north of the equator. The sun facts for your exact address are shown beside the Vastu reading as measurements, not as Vastu rules. In this climate the west-facing rooms take the strongest afternoon heat, which matters for comfort whatever tradition you follow.
New to Vastu? What it is, in brief
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture and home layout, set out in Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara. It divides a home into eight directional zones around its centre and suggests which rooms and activities suit which zone. Many Indian families use it when they buy, build or arrange a home, and so do people of other backgrounds who are curious about how a home is laid out.
Kept the lightest and least cluttered part of the home; a good place for prayer or quiet.
The zone traditionally linked with Agni, fire, so it is the classical place for cooking.
Linked with weight and stability; tradition places the main bedroom and heavy storage here.
It is a cultural tradition, not a science, and it does not promise outcomes. VastuIQ shows what the classical texts recommend, measured accurately for your home and your city, and you decide what to do with it. Most of the report's fixes need no building work: they are about how rooms are used and arranged.
Compass vs true north in Malaysia
Across Malaysia a compass points within about 1° of true north, and daylight stays close to 12 hours all year. Your score still uses the exact figures for your town.
| City | Compass vs true north | Daylight, mid-winter to mid-summer |
|---|---|---|
| Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur | 0.0° east | 11.9 – 12.3 h |
| Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur | 0.0° east | 11.9 – 12.3 h |
| Petaling Jaya, Selangor | 0.0° east | 11.9 – 12.3 h |
| Subang Jaya, Selangor | 0.0° east | 11.9 – 12.3 h |
| Shah Alam, Selangor | 0.0° east | 11.9 – 12.3 h |
| Cyberjaya, Selangor | 0.0° east | 12.0 – 12.3 h |
| Putrajaya, Putrajaya | 0.0° east | 12.0 – 12.3 h |
| Seremban, Negeri Sembilan | 0.1° east | 12.0 – 12.3 h |
| Melaka, Melaka | 0.1° east | 12.0 – 12.3 h |

Calculated for 2026 with the World Magnetic Model WMM-2025 (NOAA / British Geological Survey) and NOAA solar equations. "East" means a compass points to the east of true north.
Condos and strata homes
In a condo, serviced apartment or gated-and-guarded scheme, the Joint Management Body (JMB) or the Management Corporation (MC) sets rules for the outside and the common property. Choose Own it (building rules) in the tool: the report then leads with fixes inside the home and marks anything that touches the structure or the outside as "If renovating".

Vastu in Malaysia: questions people ask
Does Vastu work in Malaysia?
Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, which are the same in Malaysia as in India, so its room-by-direction guidance can be applied to a Malaysian home. What matters is getting north right on the floor plan and reading local rooms, such as wet and dry kitchens and the car porch, properly. Vastu is a tradition; it does not promise outcomes.
Vastu or feng shui: which should I follow?
They are separate traditions and you can follow either, or both. Vastu Shastra comes from India and reads eight directions around the centre of the home; feng shui comes from China and its schools also look at the surroundings and, in some cases, at the occupants' birth year. VastuIQ gives a Vastu reading only; if you also follow feng shui, use it alongside a feng shui practitioner's advice.
How does Vastu treat a wet kitchen and a dry kitchen?
Both are read as kitchens, and each is scored by its own direction. Tradition places cooking with fire best in the south-east, with the north-west as the usual second choice.
Do I need to correct my compass for Vastu in Malaysia?
Only slightly. A compass points about 0.0° from true north in Kuala Lumpur and about 1° west in Kota Kinabalu (World Magnetic Model). That rarely moves a room into the next zone, but VastuIQ still corrects it. The bigger risk is a plan whose north arrow is missing or wrong.
Can I check a terrace house or a condo?
Yes. A terrace house is checked like any other home, from the layout inside its walls. For a condo, mark the outline of your own unit; its front door is your unit door, not the lobby.
Can I compare homes before buying in Malaysia?
Yes. Use Compare 2–3 homes: the side-by-side comparison is free, and Home Buyer Compare (US$79, about RM322) adds a PDF that ranks the homes and includes the full report for the one you choose.
The midday sun is in the north for part of the year here. Does Vastu change?
Malaysia is north of the equator, so VastuIQ keeps the classical directions. The midday sun is on the north side of the sky for about 170 days a year in Kuala Lumpur; the report shows this as a measured sun fact beside the Vastu reading, not as a Vastu rule.
