Does Vastu work in Singapore?
Yes. Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, and they are the same in Singapore as in India, so its guidance applies to an HDB flat or a condo unit. Two things are different here. A compass in Singapore points almost exactly at true north (about 0.2° off), so the correction is tiny; the bigger risk is a floor plan with north in the wrong place. And Singapore lies just north of the equator, so the midday sun is high all year and on the north side of the sky for about half of it. Many buyers here also think about feng shui; the two are compared below.
Vastu and feng shui: how they compare
Many homes in Singapore are chosen with feng shui in mind, and many buyers know both traditions. They are separate systems, and VastuIQ reads Vastu only, but it helps to see where they meet and where they differ.
| Vastu Shastra | Feng shui | |
|---|---|---|
| Comes from | India: Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara | China: classical schools such as the Form school and the Compass school |
| What it reads | Eight directions around the centre of the home (the Brahmasthan) | The surroundings and landforms, and compass directions with the Bagua |
| Personal factors | The same directions for everyone in the home | Some schools add the occupants' birth year (Eight Mansions, the Kua number) or the building's age (Flying Stars) |
| Which north | VastuIQ uses true north, the geographic direction | Practitioners traditionally read a luopan, which is a magnetic compass |
| The main door | Its direction and its exact position on the wall (the pada) | Its facing direction and what it looks out on |
Where they usually agree: a clear, welcoming entrance, tidy and uncluttered rooms, and plenty of natural light. Where they differ, VastuIQ does not choose for you: the report gives the Vastu reading, and if you also follow feng shui you can weigh it alongside a feng shui practitioner's advice. In Singapore a compass and true north are almost the same, so the "which north" difference makes no practical difference here.
Singapore homes, read correctly
The report uses the names on your plan and reads them the way a home here is built:
The reinforced household shelter (bomb shelter) is read as a store room. Traditionally best for storage: South-West, South or West, where heavy storage is traditionally placed.
Read as a utility area, by its direction. Traditionally best: North-West or South-East, the air and fire zones.
The master bedroom is read as the main bedroom; common bedrooms as other bedrooms. Traditionally best for the main bedroom: South-West, traditionally the zone of earth and stability, for the head of the household.
Read as kitchens. Traditionally best: South-East, the zone traditionally linked with Agni (fire). North-West is the usual second choice.
Your own front door is the main door that is checked, with its exact position (pada) on its wall. The block lobby and the lift are not.
Read as a prayer space. Traditionally best: North-East (Ishanya), traditionally the most sacred zone.
The sun near the equator
Classical Vastu was written in India, where the midday sun is always to the south. Singapore lies just north of the equator, so the sun is high at midday all year: in Singapore about 65° above the horizon to the south in December, and about 68° to the north in June. It is on the north side of the sky for about 180 days a year.
VastuIQ keeps the classical directions here, because Singapore is north of the equator. The sun facts for your exact address are shown beside the Vastu reading as measurements, not as Vastu rules. In this climate the west-facing rooms take the strongest afternoon heat, which matters for comfort whatever tradition you follow.
Choosing a BTO flat or a new-launch condo
For a BTO flat or a new condo launch, you usually choose your unit from floor plans before the building exists. Upload the unit plan, set north from the site plan in the brochure, and confirm the rooms: the free score takes a few minutes, so you can compare several units, or the same layout on different sides of the block, before you book.
New to Vastu? What it is, in brief
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture and home layout, set out in Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara. It divides a home into eight directional zones around its centre and suggests which rooms and activities suit which zone. Many Indian families use it when they buy, build or arrange a home, and so do people of other backgrounds who are curious about how a home is laid out.
Kept the lightest and least cluttered part of the home; a good place for prayer or quiet.
The zone traditionally linked with Agni, fire, so it is the classical place for cooking.
Linked with weight and stability; tradition places the main bedroom and heavy storage here.
It is a cultural tradition, not a science, and it does not promise outcomes. VastuIQ shows what the classical texts recommend, measured accurately for your home and your city, and you decide what to do with it. Most of the report's fixes need no building work: they are about how rooms are used and arranged.
HDB rules and condo by-laws
In an HDB flat some renovation works need HDB's approval, and in a condo the management corporation (MCST) has by-laws for anything seen from outside. Choose Own it (building rules) in the tool: the report then leads with fixes inside the home, such as how rooms are used and arranged, and marks anything structural as "If renovating".
Compass vs true north in Singapore
Across Singapore a compass points within a fraction of a degree of true north, and daylight stays close to 12 hours all year. Your score still uses the exact figures for your town.
| City | Compass vs true north | Daylight, mid-winter to mid-summer |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore, Singapore | 0.2° east | 12.1 – 12.2 h |
| Tampines, Singapore | 0.2° east | 12.0 – 12.2 h |
| Bedok, Singapore | 0.2° east | 12.0 – 12.2 h |
| Jurong West, Singapore | 0.2° east | 12.0 – 12.2 h |
| Woodlands, Singapore | 0.2° east | 12.0 – 12.2 h |
| Sengkang, Singapore | 0.2° east | 12.0 – 12.2 h |
| Punggol, Singapore | 0.2° east | 12.0 – 12.2 h |
| Yishun, Singapore | 0.2° east | 12.0 – 12.2 h |
| Bukit Timah, Singapore | 0.2° east | 12.0 – 12.2 h |
| Pasir Ris, Singapore | 0.2° east | 12.0 – 12.2 h |
Calculated for 2026 with the World Magnetic Model WMM-2025 (NOAA / British Geological Survey) and NOAA solar equations. "East" means a compass points to the east of true north.

Vastu in Singapore: questions people ask
Does Vastu work for an HDB flat?
Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, which are the same in Singapore as in India, so its guidance can be applied to an HDB flat: the report reads your flat's own outline, its rooms and your unit door. Most of its fixes need no renovation. Vastu is a tradition; it does not promise outcomes.
What is the difference between Vastu and feng shui?
Both are traditional systems for arranging a home. Vastu Shastra comes from India and reads eight directions around the centre of the home. Feng shui comes from China; its schools look at the surroundings, at compass directions with the Bagua, and in some cases at the occupants' birth year or the building's age. VastuIQ gives a Vastu reading only.
Do I need to correct my compass for Vastu in Singapore?
Hardly at all. A compass points about 0.2° from true north in Singapore (World Magnetic Model), far too little to move a room into another zone. The bigger risk is a floor plan whose north arrow is missing or wrong, so check north against a map of your block.
How does Vastu treat the household shelter?
The household shelter is read as a store room, which tradition places best in the south-west, south or west, where heavy storage belongs. You can change how any room is read on the confirm screen.
Can I check a BTO or new-launch unit before booking?
Yes. Upload the unit floor plan from the brochure, set north using the site plan, confirm the rooms and you get a free score in a few minutes. To choose between units, use Compare 2–3 homes: the side-by-side comparison is free, and Home Buyer Compare (US$79, about S$101) adds a PDF that ranks them and includes the full report for the one you choose.
The sun is in the north for part of the year here. Does that change Vastu?
Singapore is north of the equator, so VastuIQ keeps the classical directions. The midday sun is on the north side of the sky for about 180 days a year here; the report shows this as a measured sun fact beside the Vastu reading, not as a Vastu rule.
