What is a Home Vastu Report?

A Home Vastu Report checks the layout of a house, townhouse or condo against the traditional directions of Vastu Shastra. VastuIQ reads your floor plan, corrects north for your city, places every room in one of eight zones and scores it from 0 to 100, with fixes that need no construction. The score is free; the full report is a personal PDF.

    Does Vastu work outside India?

Vastu Shastra organises a home by direction: the kitchen in the south-east, the main bedroom in the south-west, an open and light north-east. North, east, south and west are the same everywhere, so this guidance can be applied to a home in New Jersey, Ontario or Victoria just as it is in India.

Three things are different, and a report written for Indian homes ignores them:

    1. Your compass is not pointing at true north. The gap (magnetic declination) is 10° to 15° in many North American and Australian cities. That is enough to move a room into the next zone.
    2. The sun follows a different path. In Australia the midday sun is in the north, not the south.
    3. The homes are different. Attached garages, basements, powder rooms and open-plan great rooms need to be read correctly.

VastuIQ handles all three. It does not change the classical tables, and it does not promise health, wealth or any other outcome: Vastu is a tradition, and the report presents it as one.

How far is your compass from true north?

These are the compass corrections for 2026, calculated with the World Magnetic Model (NOAA and the British Geological Survey). "East" means a compass points to the east of true north. Your score uses the exact figure for your own city.

How to check the Vastu of your floor plan online

    1. Choose your city. True north and the sun path are calculated for your location.
    2. Upload your floor plan. A photo, screenshot or PDF of each floor. Our plan reader finds the rooms, the outline and the front door.
    3. Confirm north, the door and the rooms. Correct anything the reader got wrong. Nothing is scored until you confirm.
    4. See your Vastu Score. Your score out of 100, its band and your top three issues, on screen.

No plan? Choose Quick score and tell us which direction each room is in. It is less exact, because the true centre of the home and your door's exact position are unknown.

Which way is north on my floor plan?

Many plans from builders and listings have no north arrow. Three reliable ways to find it:

    • Google Maps or Apple Maps: find your street. The top of the map is true north, so you can match the front of your home to it.
    • Your phone's compass: stand in your front doorway facing out. The tool reads the direction and corrects it for your city.
    • The site plan or survey: the north arrow on a survey or lot plan is true north.

Hold the phone flat and away from metal doors and appliances, and check twice.

Vastu in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere

The classical Vastu texts were written in India, north of the equator. They give no separate rules for homes south of it, and practitioners today take three different views:

    ViewWhat it says
Keep the classical directionsDirections are directions; a north-east kitchen means the same in Sydney as in Delhi.
Flip north and southThe midday sun is in the north in Australia, so the roles of north and south should swap.
Adjust for the sun onlyKeep the directions but read light and warmth from the local sun path.

What VastuIQ does: the score follows the classical directions. Beside any room where the flipped view would change the reading by 25 points or more, the report shows that reading too, so you can see both and decide. The sun section uses real sun positions for your city, as measured facts rather than Vastu claims.

In the tropics the sun swings to both sides of the sky. In Darwin, for example, the midday sun is on the south side for about 114 days a year, and the report notes this for tropical homes.

Vastu for north, east, south and west facing houses

Traditionally, entrances in the north, north-east or east are favoured. A west-facing or south-facing house is not a bad house: where the door sits on its wall (its pada) and how the rooms are placed matter more than the facing alone.

House facesWhat tradition saysWhat to check
NorthFavoured; linked with opportunity.Keep the north side open and uncluttered.
EastFavoured; morning light at the entrance.Avoid tall trees or structures blocking the east.
WestNeutral; common and workable.Door position on the wall, and a heavier south-west.
SouthTreated with care, not avoided.Door position on the wall matters most here.

To check one door in detail, use the Main Door Vastu Checker or the Pada Calculator.

Vastu for American, Canadian and Australian homes

The report uses the room names on your plan: great room, owner's suite, powder room, mudroom, garage. Here is where tradition places them.

    RoomTraditionally bestNote
KitchenSouth-East, the zone traditionally linked with Agni (fire). North-West is the usual second choice.Open-plan kitchens are read by where the cooktop and the kitchen area sit.
Primary BedroomSouth-West, traditionally the zone of earth and stability, for the head of the household.Often called the owner's suite or master; the walk-in closet and ensuite are read separately.
Living / Family RoomNorth, North-East or East.Great rooms and family rooms; an open living area at the centre of the home is fine.
Home Office / StudyNorth, North-East or East.Home offices and dens.
GarageNorth-West, traditionally the zone of movement (Vayu). South-East is also acceptable.Attached garages count as part of the home outline.
Powder Room / WCNorth-West or West.Half baths and powder rooms; the north-east and the centre are the places to avoid.
Laundry / MudroomNorth-West or South-East, the air and fire zones. Not in the classical texts; scored from the nearest classical zone and marked as such.
StaircaseSouth, South-West or West. A staircase in the centre or north-east is traditionally discouraged; stairs are rarely moved, so the fixes below are the practical route.Stairs are rarely moved, so the report gives practical fixes instead.
Prayer / Pooja RoomNorth-East (Ishanya), traditionally the most sacred zone.A prayer shelf or pooja corner works as well as a separate room.
BasementStorage, recreation or parking rather than the main bedroom.Classical texts do not describe full basements; basement rooms are scored by direction and marked.
Centre (Brahmasthan)Open. An open-plan living area at the centre is fine; toilets, stairs and closed rooms there are what tradition discourages.

    Vastu consultant or online report?

A Vastu consultation in the USA, Canada or Australia usually costs a few hundred dollars and takes days to arrange. An online report is faster and costs far less, and it is a good first check for a home you live in or are about to buy. If you are designing a new home or planning a major renovation, a consultant who can work with your architect is worth considering as well.

    Renting, condos and HOA homes

Vastu is mostly about how you use rooms, so it works for any home. Choose Renting and every fix is one that needs no construction and no permission. In a condo, mark the outline of your own unit; its front door is your unit door. Almost every fix is inside the home, and the few that need building work are clearly marked "If renovating", so condo and HOA owners can skip them.

    How VastuIQ calculates your score

    • True north: World Magnetic Model WMM-2025 (NOAA / British Geological Survey) for your city.
    • Directions: the bearing from the centre of your home to the centre of each room, in eight zones of 45°. The middle ninth of the home is the Brahmasthan.
    • Scores: VastuIQ's classical tables, the same ones used for our reports on homes in India. Rooms close to a zone line are flagged.
    • Sun: NOAA solar position equations. City data: GeoNames (CC BY 4.0).
    • AI: used only to read the plan. You confirm everything; AI never sets a score.

    Questions people ask

Does Vastu work outside India, in the USA, Canada or Australia?

Vastu Shastra is organised around the cardinal directions, and north, east, south and west exist everywhere, so its room-by-direction guidance can be applied to any home. What changes outside India is practical: a compass points several degrees away from true north in most North American and Australian cities, the sun follows a different path, and homes have garages, basements and open-plan rooms. South of the equator, practitioners disagree on whether to flip north and south. Vastu is a tradition; no report can promise an outcome.

Is the free Vastu Score really free?

Yes. You enter your email address and see your score, its band and your top three issues on screen. No card is needed. The full report with fixes is optional.

My floor plan has no north arrow. What do I do?

Most builder and listing floor plans in the USA and Canada have none. Open your address in Google Maps, where the top of the map is north, and turn the arrow on screen to match. Or stand at your front door, face out, and use the compass button on your phone; we correct the phone reading for your city.

Should Vastu use magnetic north or true north?

VastuIQ uses true north, the geographic direction the classical texts describe. A compass points to magnetic north, which differs from true north by about 14.9° east in Seattle and 13.9° west in Boston. That is enough to move a room into the next zone, so we correct every compass reading with the World Magnetic Model for your city.

How does Vastu work in the Southern Hemisphere?

There is no single answer. Some practitioners keep the classical directions, some flip north and south because the midday sun is in the north, and some adjust only for the sun. The classical texts were written in India and give no separate southern rules. VastuIQ scores the classical directions and, for homes in Australia, shows the flipped reading beside any room where it changes the result by 25 points or more, so you can see both.

Can I check the Vastu of a house before I buy it?

Yes. Most listings include a floor plan image. Upload it, confirm the rooms and you get a score in a few minutes. To choose between homes on your shortlist, use Compare 2–3 homes: the side-by-side comparison is free, and Home Buyer Compare (US$79) adds a PDF with which home fits Vastu best, how easy each one's issues are to fix, and the full report for the home you choose.

Does Vastu apply to a rented home, condo or HOA home?

Yes. Choose "Renting" and every fix in the report is one that needs no construction and no landlord permission. For a condo, mark the outline of your own unit; its front door is your unit door. Almost every fix is inside the home; the few that need building work are clearly marked "If renovating".

How are garages, basements and powder rooms scored?

From the same classical tables as every other room: a garage is read like a vehicle or movement space (north-west is ideal, south-east is also acceptable) and a powder room like a toilet (north-west or west). Basements are scored floor by floor. Laundry, mudroom and furnace rooms are not in the classical texts, so they are scored from the nearest classical zone and clearly marked as an extension.

    Is my floor plan stored?

For the free score, your plan is sent to our plan reader to find the rooms and is not saved on VastuIQ's servers. If you later buy the full report, your plan is kept only to make it and is deleted within 30 days. We never share or sell floor plans.

Does AI decide my Vastu score?

No. AI only reads where the rooms, the outline, the front door and the north arrow are, and you confirm or correct every item. The score comes from fixed classical tables, so the same home always gets the same score.

What does the full Home Vastu Report include?

A personal PDF of about 24 pages for US$39: true north and the sun path for your city, your floor plans with the eight zones drawn at true north, every room scored with no-cost and low-cost fixes, the centre (Brahmasthan) and your front door's pada, the best use of your rooms, a placement guide for each zone, an action plan, a 90-day plan and a checklist. It is emailed to you and ready to download as soon as you pay.

Do I need a Vastu consultant in the USA instead?

The report is a structured first check of an existing or shortlisted home, at a fraction of the usual cost of a consultation. If you are designing a new home from scratch or planning a major renovation, a consultant who can review drawings with your architect is worth considering as well.
