North and east are traditionally the most favoured directions for a main door, but in pada-based Vastu the position on the wall matters as much as the direction. Each wall is split into 8 padas. Positions near the centre (padas 4 and 5) are read as the strongest on every side, and positions right beside a corner (padas 1 and 8) need the most care.

In our method, north carries the highest direction weighting, then east, west and south. That's why the checker always shows you both: the direction and the exact pada.

A south-facing main door is the one people worry about most, but Vastu does not call every south door bad. S4 and S5 at the centre of the wall read best; S8, right by the south-west corner, needs the most care.

No, not by itself. The idea that every south-facing door is unlucky is a popular belief, not what pada-based Vastu says. The exact position on the south wall decides the reading.

We won't pretend south is identical to north: in our method a south door starts with a lower direction weighting. But a south door near the centre of the wall still reads well on position, and what your door faces, how it's built and how the entry is kept can move your overall result more than the direction does. A well-kept south door at S4 can finish with a strong overall result.

Two doors facing each other is traditionally read as a clash at the threshold. It's very common and easy to soften: keep your door closed when not in use, hang a fresh toran, use a good doormat to mark your own threshold, and keep a healthy plant beside (not in front of) your door.

A staircase going down in front of the door is traditionally read as energy flowing away; one going up is a milder concern. Keep the landing bright and clean, and place a plant or a heavy decorative piece beside the door.

Traditionally the main door should open inward, and ideally clockwise, so the home "receives" the entry. An outward-opening or sliding door is a minor point that the checker includes in your door score.

Keep it to the side rather than right at the door or in its direct line, and keep it closed. A shoe rack or dustbin right at the entrance is one of the easiest things to fix for free.

Stand in the doorway facing outside, hold your phone flat with its top pointing straight out of the door, and read the compass. The direction it shows is the direction your door faces. Metal doors and lift shafts can disturb phone compasses, so step a metre outside and check twice. The checker has a built-in compass button.

Direction is the side of the home the door is on (north, east, south or west). Pada is the exact position on that side: each side is split into 8 padas, 32 in all. Two north-facing doors can sit on very different padas.
