    Does Vastu work in Canada?

Vastu applies in Canada in the same way as in India, because it is about directions. What changes is the compass: in Brampton it points about 10° west of true north and in Surrey about 15° east, enough to put a room in the wrong zone if it is not corrected. Basements, condos and the low winter sun are the other Canadian details the report handles.

Compass vs true north in Canada

Canada has some of the largest compass corrections of any country where Indian families buy homes. In Ontario and Quebec a compass points west of true north; in the Prairies the gap is small; in Alberta and British Columbia it points well to the east. Your score uses the exact figure for your own city.

CityCompass vs true northDaylight, mid-winter to mid-summer
    Brampton, ON9.9° west8.9 – 15.4 h
    Mississauga, ON10.0° west8.9 – 15.4 h
    Toronto, ON10.1° west8.9 – 15.5 h
    Markham, ON10.2° west8.9 – 15.5 h
    Ottawa, ON12.6° west8.7 – 15.7 h
    Montréal, QC13.6° west8.7 – 15.7 h
    Winnipeg, MB2.7° east8.1 – 16.4 h
    Regina, SK8.2° east8.0 – 16.5 h
    Calgary, AB13.3° east7.9 – 16.6 h
    Edmonton, AB13.5° east7.5 – 17.0 h
    Surrey, BC15.3° east8.2 – 16.2 h
    Vancouver, BC15.4° east8.2 – 16.2 h

Calculated for 2026 with the World Magnetic Model WMM-2025 (NOAA / British Geological Survey) and NOAA solar equations. "East" means a compass points to the east of true north.

    Basements and basement suites

Many Canadian homes have a finished basement, and in some it is a separate rental suite.

    • Basement used by your family: upload it as a floor of the home. Its rooms are scored by direction and marked as basement rooms; storage, recreation or a gym suit a basement better than the main bedroom.
    • Basement suite rented out: it is a separate home. Check it on its own, with the suite's own outline and its own front door.

Winter sun and long summer days

Canadian homes see big seasonal swings in light. In Edmonton daylight runs from about 7.5 hours in mid-winter to 17.0 hours in mid-summer, and in Brampton from 8.9 to 15.4 hours.

The midday sun is always to the south and low in winter, so south-facing rooms get the most winter light. The report shows these sun facts for your city as measurements, next to the Vastu reading, not as Vastu rules.

Condos in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary

For a condo, mark the outline of your own unit and its front door is your unit door. Almost every fix is inside the unit; the few that need building work are marked "If renovating", so condo rules rarely get in the way.

Vastu in Canada: questions people ask

    Does Vastu apply in Canada?

Yes. Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, which are the same in Canada as in India, so its guidance can be applied to a Canadian home. The important step is using true north for your city, because a compass in Canada can be off by more than 10°. Vastu is a tradition; it does not promise outcomes.

How far off is a compass in Brampton, Surrey or Calgary?

About 10° west in Brampton, 13° east in Calgary and 15° east in Surrey, and only 3° east in Winnipeg (World Magnetic Model). VastuIQ corrects every compass reading for your city.

How does Vastu treat a basement suite?

If your family uses the basement, upload it as a floor of the home. If it is a separate rental suite, check it as its own home with its own outline and front door. Basement rooms are scored by direction and marked as basement rooms.

Can I check a condo in Canada?

Yes. Mark the outline of your own unit; its front door is your unit door. Choose "Own it (HOA rules)" or "Renting" so the fixes suit what you are allowed to change.

Which direction is best for a house in Canada?

Tradition favours north- and east-facing entrances, but where the door sits on its wall (its pada) and how the rooms are placed matter more than the facing alone. Separately from Vastu, south-facing rooms get the most winter sun in Canada.

Can I compare homes before buying in Canada?

Yes. Use Compare 2–3 homes: the side-by-side comparison is free, and Home Buyer Compare (US$79) adds a PDF that ranks the homes and includes the full report for the one you choose.
