A Shubh Muhurat is a time window that Vedic astrology considers favourable for starting an important event. This calculator checks every minute of every day in the quarter you choose against the classical Panchang rules for your event: the Moon's nakshatra, the tithi, the weekday, and the periods that are set aside entirely (Chaturmas, Kharmas, Holashtak, Pitru Paksha, and Jupiter or Venus being combust, depending on the event). Until Devuthani Ekadashi the four months of Chaturmas are running, a period when Lord Vishnu is believed to be asleep and marriages and house-entry (Griha Pravesh) are traditionally paused. In 2026 Devuthani Ekadashi falls on 21 November by the strict convention, so the first dates appear just after it. Traditions genuinely differ. Some websites accept Pratipada or Ashtami for marriage and we do not. Some count Venus as combust within 9 degrees of the Sun and we use 10 (the classical Brihat Parashara value for Venus when it is moving forward). Regional calendars also differ on Devuthani Ekadashi by a day in some years, and southern and Maharashtrian calendars apply different month rules. Kharmas (also called Malmas) is the month when the Sun is in sidereal Sagittarius (Dhanu) or Pisces (Meena). Marriages, house-entry and most auspicious beginnings are avoided during it. This tool calculates the exact moment the Sun enters each sign, so the dates shift by a day or two each year. Tithi and nakshatra are the same everywhere because they depend on the Sun and Moon, not on where you stand; sunrise, Rahu Kaal and Choghadiya are calculated for the city you select, using that city's timezone for each month. The Chaturmas and Holi dates are Indian-calendar dates and apply the same way to everyone observing them. Not yet. Eclipse days, Panchak, Mercury retrograde and the lagna-specific timing of a ceremony are not part of this version, and sources disagree about Panchak for house-entry and property. The best-time window we show only avoids Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika and the inauspicious Choghadiya. The strongest nakshatras are Ashwini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha and Revati, and the favoured tithis are Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami and Trayodashi. The sources we checked prefer Thursday, then Friday and Wednesday, avoid Tuesday and Saturday, and favour the fixed nakshatras Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada, with tithis such as Tritiya, Panchami and Dashami. Wednesday is the most favoured weekday for trade, followed by Thursday and Friday; Tuesday and Saturday are avoided. Pushya, Hasta and Anuradha are the strongest nakshatras, and the favoured tithis are Panchami, Saptami, Dashami and Ekadashi. The calculator also removes Kharmas and Pitru Paksha, avoids Rahu Kaal and Gulika, and gives a small bonus to Abhijit Muhurat around noon. These events avoid Pitru Paksha, the fortnight of ancestor rites that ends on Sarva Pitru Amavasya. The tool removes it up to 10 October 2026 and from 15 to 29 September 2027. Business opening also skips Kharmas, so its list pauses from about 16 December 2026 to 14 January 2027 and from about 15 March to 14 April 2027. The traditional day is the 11th or 12th day after birth, and many families hold it later in the first year. The sources we checked prefer Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, avoid Tuesday, Saturday, Amavasya and the Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi), and name Rohini, Pushya and Shravana among the best nakshatras. The tool does not ask for a birth date, so it lists every suitable date for your city. Pisces is left out because Kharmas is avoided, and the months from mid-July to mid-January are outside Uttarayana. The tool also removes Chaturmas.
