Kundli Matching (Guna Milan) compares the bride's and groom's Moon signs and birth stars across eight factors called kootas, worth 36 points in all. A score of 18 or more is the usual traditional threshold, 25 and above is considered good, and Nadi, Bhakoot and Gana are read more carefully than the total. Guna Milan uses only the Moon, and the Moon changes nakshatra about once a day and sign every two and a half days. Most of the time an approximate time is fine, but not near a change. A real case: a bride born in Mumbai on 25 June 1998, matched with a groom born in Bengaluru on 12 December 1995 at 8:15 AM. Her Moon left Gemini and entered Cancer at about 10:32 PM. Born at 11:00 PM, her Moon is in Cancer and the match scores 28.5 out of 36. Entered as 10:00 PM, her Moon is still in Gemini, Bhakoot and Graha Maitri drop, and the same couple scores 17. Why 18? It is half of 36, and the traditional rule of thumb is that at least half the gunas should agree. It is a convention, not a law of nature: an 18 with a Nadi dosha can be a bigger question than a 16 where Nadi, Bhakoot and Gana are all full. So a Deva bride with a Rakshasa groom scores 0, while a Rakshasa bride with a Deva groom scores 1. Same gana always scores 6, and Manushya with Rakshasa scores 0 either way. Nadi dosha means both Moons fall in the same nadi. Classical texts cancel it when the two share the same Moon sign but different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra but different padas (quarters). Bhakoot dosha means the Moon signs sit 2–12, 5–9 or 6–8 apart. A real example: a bride born in Chandigarh on 2 January 1996 at 9:00 AM (Moon in Taurus, Krittika) and a groom born there on 23 January 1994 at 6:00 PM (Moon in Taurus, Rohini). Krittika and Rohini are both Antya nadi, so Nadi scores 0, but the same sign with different nakshatras cancels the dosha. The total is 20 out of 36, Acceptable, with the green cancellation note. Guna Milan does not include Mangal Dosha, so the tool checks it separately for both of you, with the same rules as our Manglik Calculator: Mars counted from Lagna and Moon, then the three cancellation rules. A partner counts as Manglik only if the placement is there and no cancellation applies. On paper this is a strong match, and the big three are mostly fine. Two lines still deserve a conversation. Gana is 0, so it helps to talk openly about temper and how each of you handles conflict (had the roles been reversed, Gana would be 1 and the total 29.5). The Manglik line reads "Only one partner is Manglik": the bride is partial Manglik with no cancellation, while the groom's placement is cancelled by Jupiter sitting with Mars.
