Does Vastu work in the UK?
Yes. Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, and north, east, south and west are the same in the UK as in India, so its guidance applies to a semi in Leicester or a flat in London. The compass here is close to true north (about 1° east in London), so that correction is small. What needs more care is the plan itself, because many estate-agent floor plans have no north arrow, and British homes have rooms the classical texts never described, such as conservatories, box rooms and loft conversions.
New to Vastu? What it is, in brief
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture and home layout, set out in Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara. It divides a home into eight directional zones around its centre and suggests which rooms and activities suit which zone. Many Indian families use it when they buy, build or arrange a home, and so do people of other backgrounds who are curious about how a home is laid out.
Kept the lightest and least cluttered part of the home; a good place for prayer or quiet.
The zone traditionally linked with Agni, fire, so it is the classical place for cooking.
Linked with weight and stability; tradition places the main bedroom and heavy storage here.
It is a cultural tradition, not a science, and it does not promise outcomes. VastuIQ shows what the classical texts recommend, measured accurately for your home and your city, and you decide what to do with it. Most of the report's fixes need no building work: they are about how rooms are used and arranged.
Low winter sun, long summer evenings
The UK is much further north than India. In London the midday sun is only about 15° above the horizon in December and about 62° in June. It is always to the south at midday, so south-facing rooms get the most winter light, and a window facing north gets almost no direct sun between the autumn and spring equinoxes. These are measurements for each place, shown next to the Vastu reading, not Vastu rules.

British homes, read correctly
The report uses the names on your plan and reads them the way a home here is built:
Read as a garden room or outdoor area. Traditionally best: North, North-East or East.
Read as a small bedroom, or as a study if you name it so on the confirm screen. Each is scored by its direction.
Upload each floor on its own. Loft rooms are placed on the top floor and scored by direction like any other room.
An extension is part of the home outline, so it can move the centre of the home. The report finds the centre from the outline you confirm.
Read as a toilet or bathroom. The north-east and the centre of the home are the places tradition avoids.
Mark the outline of your own flat; its front door is your flat door, not the entrance to the building.
Terraced, semi-detached and detached houses
In a terraced house only the front and back walls are open, and a semi shares one side too. Vastu reads the layout inside your own walls, so a terrace is checked like any other home: where the front door sits on its wall (its pada), where the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms fall, and whether the centre of the home is kept open. The report does not mark a home down for its shared walls.
Compass vs true north in the UK
The UK has one of the smallest compass corrections of any country VastuIQ covers: within about 2° of true north everywhere, slightly east of it in most of England and Wales and slightly west of it in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Your score still uses the exact figure for your own town.
| City | Compass vs true north | Daylight, mid-winter to mid-summer |
|---|---|---|
| London, England | 1.2° east | 7.8 – 16.6 h |
| Slough, England | 1.1° east | 7.8 – 16.6 h |
| Leicester, England | 0.8° east | 7.6 – 16.9 h |
| Birmingham, England | 0.5° east | 7.7 – 16.8 h |
| Coventry, England | 0.7° east | 7.7 – 16.8 h |
| Wolverhampton, England | 0.5° east | 7.6 – 16.9 h |
| Manchester, England | 0.3° east | 7.5 – 17.0 h |
| Leeds, England | 0.5° east | 7.4 – 17.1 h |
| Bradford, England | 0.5° east | 7.4 – 17.1 h |
| Newcastle upon Tyne, England | 0.4° east | 7.2 – 17.4 h |
| Norwich, England | 1.6° east | 7.6 – 16.9 h |
| Plymouth, England | 0.0° west | 8.0 – 16.4 h |
| Cardiff, Wales | 0.2° east | 7.8 – 16.6 h |
| Edinburgh, Scotland | 0.3° west | 7.0 – 17.6 h |
| Glasgow, Scotland | 0.7° west | 7.0 – 17.6 h |

A south-facing garden, or a north-facing one?
UK buyers often look for a south-facing garden for the sun. Classical Vastu prefers more open space to the north and east of a home, and heavier, more closed sides to the south and west, which is close to the opposite. Neither decides on its own: the report scores your actual layout and shows the sun facts for your town beside the Vastu reading, so you can weigh both.
Leasehold flats, listed buildings and planning
If you own a leasehold flat, or your home is listed or in a conservation area, changes to the outside usually need permission. Choose Own it (building rules) in the tool: the report then leads with fixes inside the home and marks anything that touches the structure or the outside as "If renovating".

Vastu in the UK: questions people ask
Does Vastu work in the UK?
Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, which are the same in the UK as in India, so its room-by-direction guidance can be applied to a British home. What matters is getting north right on the floor plan and reading British rooms such as conservatories, box rooms and loft conversions properly. Vastu is a tradition; it does not promise outcomes.
What is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture and home layout, set out in Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara. It divides a home into directional zones and suggests which rooms suit which zone, for example the kitchen in the south-east and the main bedroom in the south-west. It is a cultural tradition, not a science.
Do I need to correct my compass for Vastu in the UK?
Only slightly. A compass points about 1° east of true north in London, 0° east in Manchester, 1° west in Glasgow and 1° west in Belfast (World Magnetic Model). That rarely moves a room into the next zone, but VastuIQ still corrects it. The bigger risk is a floor plan with no north arrow, so check north against a map of your street.
Can I check a terraced house or a flat?
Yes. A terraced house is checked like any other home, from the layout inside its walls. For a flat or maisonette, mark the outline of your own home; its front door is your flat door, not the entrance to the building.
How does Vastu treat a conservatory or an extension?
A conservatory is read as a garden room, which tradition places best in the north, north-east or east. An extension is part of the home outline, so it can change where the centre of the home falls; the report works this out from the outline you confirm.
Is a south-facing garden bad for Vastu?
Not on its own. Classical Vastu prefers more open space to the north and east, so a south-facing garden is not its first choice, but how the rooms and the front door are placed matters more. The report scores your actual layout.
Can I check the Vastu of a house before buying in the UK?
Yes. Most property listings include a floor plan. Upload it, set north from a map of the street, confirm the rooms and you get a free score in a few minutes. To choose between homes, use Compare 2–3 homes: the side-by-side comparison is free, and Home Buyer Compare (US$79, about £59) adds a PDF that ranks them and includes the full report for the home you choose.
