You are called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your birth chart, counted from your Lagna (rising sign) or from your Moon sign. If it qualifies from both, the chart is Manglik; from only one, it is partial Manglik. Being Manglik is very common. Mars has six "dosha" houses out of twelve, so roughly half of all charts qualify from the Lagna alone, and more than half once the Moon is counted too. The Lagna moves to the next sign roughly every two hours, so a small error in time can move Mars into, or out of, a dosha house. Take a child born in Chandigarh on 15 August 1995. Mars was in Virgo and the Moon in Pisces all morning, so Mars was 7th from the Moon either way. But at 5:50 AM the Lagna was Cancer, which puts Mars in the 3rd house from Lagna, giving partial Manglik. At 6:20 AM the Lagna had moved into Leo, which puts Mars in the 2nd house, giving full Manglik. If the time on record is rounded ("around 6 in the morning"), run the calculator for a time a little before and a little after. If both give the same status, you can rely on it. The tool counts whole signs, the way a North Indian kundli is drawn: the sign holding your Lagna is house 1, the next sign is house 2, and so on round the zodiac. Then it repeats the count with your Moon's sign as house 1 (this is called Chandra Lagna). The same classical tradition that defines Mangal Dosha also lists conditions that cancel or soften it. Look at the first chart. Mars in Pisces is neither its own nor exalted sign, Jupiter sits in Gemini (which looks at Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, not Pisces), so no rule applies and the badge reads Manglik. That sounds heavy, yet the practical path is simple: tradition says this person is best matched with another Manglik chart, or with a partner whose chart is checked properly in Kundli Matching.
