Does Vastu work in Hong Kong?
Yes. Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, which are the same in Hong Kong as in India, so its guidance applies to a flat in a tower as much as to a house. Hong Kong flats are compact, and many buyers here already think in directions through feng shui, which is compared below. The compass points about 3° west of true north, a small correction VastuIQ applies for you. And Hong Kong lies just south of the Tropic of Cancer, so around mid-June the midday sun stands almost directly overhead.
Vastu and feng shui: how they compare
Many homes in Hong Kong are chosen with feng shui in mind, and many buyers know both traditions. They are separate systems, and VastuIQ reads Vastu only, but it helps to see where they meet and where they differ.
| Vastu Shastra | Feng shui | |
|---|---|---|
| Comes from | India: Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara | China: classical schools such as the Form school and the Compass school |
| What it reads | Eight directions around the centre of the home (the Brahmasthan) | The surroundings and landforms, and compass directions with the Bagua |
| Personal factors | The same directions for everyone in the home | Some schools add the occupants' birth year (Eight Mansions, the Kua number) or the building's age (Flying Stars) |
| Which north | VastuIQ uses true north, the geographic direction | Practitioners traditionally read a luopan, which is a magnetic compass |
| The main door | Its direction and its exact position on the wall (the pada) | Its facing direction and what it looks out on |
Where they usually agree: a clear, welcoming entrance, tidy and uncluttered rooms, and plenty of natural light. Where they differ, VastuIQ does not choose for you: the report gives the Vastu reading, and if you also follow feng shui you can weigh it alongside a feng shui practitioner's advice. In Hong Kong a compass and true north are almost the same, so the "which north" difference makes no practical difference here.
Hong Kong flats, read correctly
The report uses the names on your plan and reads them the way a home here is built:
客廳 (living room), 飯廳 (dining room), 睡房 (bedroom), 主人房 (master bedroom), 廚房 (kitchen), 浴室 (bathroom), 洗手間 (toilet), 工人房 (maid's room), 儲物房 (store room) and 露台 (balcony) are understood.
Read as a staff bedroom. Traditionally best: North-West, the zone traditionally linked with Vayu (air) and movement.
A bay window is part of the room it belongs to and is read with that room.
A balcony is read as an outdoor area; a utility platform as a utility area. Traditionally best for balconies: North, North-East or East.
Read as kitchens, by their own direction. Traditionally best: South-East, the zone traditionally linked with Agni (fire). North-West is the usual second choice.
Your own front door is the main door that is checked, with its exact position (pada) on its wall, not the lift lobby.
Small flats: what you can still change
In a compact Hong Kong flat the outline and the kitchen are fixed, but a good part of a Vastu reading is not: which bedroom the parents use, where the bed and the desk face, where a prayer shelf goes, what is kept in the centre of the flat and in its north-east corner, and the colours and lighting of each room. Choose Own it (building rules) or Renting, and the report leads with exactly these no-cost fixes.
Buying from the sales brochure
For a new development, the sales brochure shows the floor plan of every unit and a location plan with north. Upload the unit plan, set north from the location plan, confirm the rooms and compare units free, including the same layout facing a different way, before you sign a preliminary agreement. VastuIQ gives Vastu guidance only.
Just south of the Tropic of Cancer
Hong Kong lies about 1° south of the Tropic of Cancer. Around mid-June the midday sun stands about 89° above the horizon, nearly overhead, and it is slightly to the north for about 36 days; in December it is about 44° high, to the south. Daylight runs from about 10.8 to 13.5 hours. VastuIQ keeps the classical directions here and shows the sun facts beside the Vastu reading as measurements.
New to Vastu? What it is, in brief
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture and home layout, set out in Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara. It divides a home into eight directional zones around its centre and suggests which rooms and activities suit which zone. Many Indian families use it when they buy, build or arrange a home, and so do people of other backgrounds who are curious about how a home is laid out.
Kept the lightest and least cluttered part of the home; a good place for prayer or quiet.
The zone traditionally linked with Agni, fire, so it is the classical place for cooking.
Linked with weight and stability; tradition places the main bedroom and heavy storage here.
It is a cultural tradition, not a science, and it does not promise outcomes. VastuIQ shows what the classical texts recommend, measured accurately for your home and your city, and you decide what to do with it. Most of the report's fixes need no building work: they are about how rooms are used and arranged.

Vastu in Hong Kong: questions people ask
Does Vastu work for a Hong Kong flat?
Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, which are the same in Hong Kong as in India, so its guidance can be applied to a flat here: the report reads your flat's outline, its rooms and your front door. Most of its fixes need no renovation. Vastu is a tradition; it does not promise outcomes.
Can I follow both Vastu and feng shui?
Yes. They are separate traditions that agree on much, such as a clear entrance, tidy rooms and good light, and differ on some details. VastuIQ gives the Vastu reading; if you also follow feng shui, weigh it alongside a feng shui master's advice.
Can I upload a plan labelled in Chinese?
Yes. Common labels such as 客廳, 飯廳, 睡房, 主人房, 廚房, 浴室, 洗手間, 工人房 and 露台 are understood. On the confirm screen you see how each room has been read and can change it. The report is in English.
Do I need to correct my compass for Vastu in Hong Kong?
Slightly: about 3° west on Hong Kong Island, 3° west in Tsim Sha Tsui and 3° west in Tuen Mun (World Magnetic Model). VastuIQ applies it automatically.
Can I compare units in a new development?
Yes. Use Compare 2–3 homes: the side-by-side comparison is free, and Home Buyer Compare (US$79, about HK$620) adds a PDF that ranks the units and includes the full report for the one you choose.
How does Vastu treat a maid's room?
A maid's room is read as a staff bedroom, which tradition places best in the north-west. In many flats it is small and next to the kitchen; you can change how it is read on the confirm screen if you use it as a store or a study.
