Does Vastu work in Germany?
Yes. Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, which are the same in Germany as in India, so its guidance applies to a flat in Frankfurt or a house near Munich. A compass in Germany points about 3–5° east of true north (about 5° east in Berlin), a small but real correction. More of the work is practical: many homes here are rented flats, so the report can lead with fixes that need no building work, and German floor plans use their own room names, which the tool understands.
New to Vastu? What it is, in brief
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture and home layout, set out in Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara. It divides a home into eight directional zones around its centre and suggests which rooms and activities suit which zone. Many Indian families use it when they buy, build or arrange a home, and so do people of other backgrounds who are curious about how a home is laid out.
Kept the lightest and least cluttered part of the home; a good place for prayer or quiet.
The zone traditionally linked with Agni, fire, so it is the classical place for cooking.
Linked with weight and stability; tradition places the main bedroom and heavy storage here.
It is a cultural tradition, not a science, and it does not promise outcomes. VastuIQ shows what the classical texts recommend, measured accurately for your home and your city, and you decide what to do with it. Most of the report's fixes need no building work: they are about how rooms are used and arranged.
German homes, read correctly
The report uses the names on your plan and reads them the way a home here is built:
Wohnen, Essen, Schlafen, Kind, Küche, Bad, WC, Flur, Abstellraum and HWR are read as living, dining, bedroom, child's room, kitchen, bathroom, toilet, hall, storage and utility room. You can change any of them on the confirm screen.
A cellar room or box room is read as storage. Traditionally best for heavy storage: South-West, South or West, where heavy storage is traditionally placed.
Read as outdoor areas. Traditionally best: North, North-East or East.
Read as a bathroom and a toilet. The north-east and the centre of the home are the places tradition avoids.
Read as a utility room, by its direction. Traditionally best: North-West or South-East, the air and fire zones.
Your own front door is the main door that is checked, with its exact position (pada) on its wall, not the door of the building.
Short winter days, long summer evenings
Germany lies far north of India. In Berlin the midday sun is only about 14° above the horizon in December and about 61° in June. It is always to the south at midday, so south-facing rooms get the most winter light, and a window facing north gets almost no direct sun between the autumn and spring equinoxes. These are measurements for each city, shown next to the Vastu reading, not Vastu rules.

Renting in Germany: fixes without building work
Many homes in Germany are rented, and changes to the fabric of a rented flat usually need the landlord's consent. Choose Renting in the tool: the fixes in your report are then ones you can make yourself, such as how the rooms are used, where the bed and the desk go, colours, lighting and keeping the right zones clear.
Compass vs true north in Germany
Across Germany a compass points between about 3° and 5½° east of true north, a little more in the east of the country than in the west. Your score uses the exact figure for your own city.
| City | Compass vs true north | Daylight, mid-winter to mid-summer |
|---|---|---|
| Hamburg, Hamburg | 4.3° east | 7.5 – 17.0 h |
| Bremen, Bremen | 3.9° east | 7.5 – 16.9 h |
| Hanover, Lower Saxony | 4.2° east | 7.7 – 16.8 h |
| Berlin, Berlin | 5.2° east | 7.7 – 16.8 h |
| Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia | 3.4° east | 7.8 – 16.6 h |
| Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia | 3.3° east | 7.9 – 16.6 h |
| Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia | 3.3° east | 7.9 – 16.5 h |
| Leipzig, Saxony | 4.8° east | 7.9 – 16.6 h |
| Dresden, Saxony | 5.1° east | 7.9 – 16.6 h |
| Frankfurt am Main, Hesse | 3.8° east | 8.1 – 16.4 h |
| Nuremberg, Bavaria | 4.3° east | 8.2 – 16.3 h |
| Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg | 3.9° east | 8.3 – 16.2 h |
| Munich, Bavaria | 4.4° east | 8.4 – 16.1 h |

Owning a flat (Eigentumswohnung)
If you own a flat, the owners' association (WEG) and the building's rules cover the outside and the shared parts. Choose Own it (building rules): the report leads with fixes inside your flat and marks anything that touches the structure or the outside as "If renovating".

Vastu in Germany: questions people ask
Does Vastu work in Germany?
Vastu Shastra is organised around directions, which are the same in Germany as in India, so its room-by-direction guidance can be applied to a German flat or house. What matters is getting north right on the floor plan and reading the rooms properly. Vastu is a tradition; it does not promise outcomes.
What is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture and home layout, set out in Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara. It divides a home into directional zones and suggests which rooms suit which zone, for example the kitchen in the south-east and the main bedroom in the south-west. It is a cultural tradition, not a science.
Can I upload a German floor plan (Grundriss)?
Yes. Room names such as Wohnen, Essen, Schlafen, Kind, Küche, Bad, WC, Flur, Abstellraum, HWR, Balkon and Keller are understood. On the confirm screen you see how each room has been read and can change it before anything is scored. The report itself is in English.
Do I need to correct my compass for Vastu in Germany?
A little. A compass points about 5° east of true north in Berlin, 4° east in Hamburg, 4° east in Frankfurt and 4° east in Munich (World Magnetic Model). That can move a room near a zone boundary, so VastuIQ corrects every compass reading for your city.
Can I use Vastu in a rented flat?
Yes. Choose "Renting" and the report leads with fixes that need no building work and no landlord approval: how rooms are used, where furniture goes, colours, lighting and keeping zones clear.
Which direction is best for a flat in Germany?
Tradition favours north- and east-facing entrances, but in a flat what matters most is where your own front door sits on its wall (its pada) and how the rooms are placed. Separately from Vastu, south-facing rooms get the most winter sun in Germany.
Can I compare flats before renting or buying?
Yes. Use Compare 2–3 homes: the side-by-side comparison is free, and Home Buyer Compare (US$79, about €70) adds a PDF that ranks the homes and includes the full report for the one you choose.
