Quick answer: A staircase, lift or kitchen in the Brahmasthan, the central one-ninth of your home, is read in Vastu as a serious defect because it puts weight, movement or fire in a zone meant to stay open. You rarely need to demolish anything. Keep the area bright, clean and clutter-free, and plan bigger changes only during a renovation.
In duplexes and villas the internal staircase often sits in the middle of the plan; in compact flats the kitchen or lift lobby can land there. This guide explains how traditional Vastu reads a staircase in Brahmasthan (and a lift or kitchen there), how to check whether yours is really inside the zone, and the safe, practical fixes for each.

Why the centre matters for stairs, lifts and kitchens
In the Vastu Purusha Mandala, the plan is drawn as a grid of squares (padas). On the common 81-square (9×9) grid, the central 9 squares are given to Brahma. That central block is one-ninth of the floor area and is linked with the space element (akasha). Traditional practice keeps it the most open and light part of the home.
Each of the three items breaks that idea in a different way:
- Staircase: a heavy structure with constant up-and-down movement, and usually a dark, closed space below it.
- Lift or lift shaft: a closed, heavy core with machinery and a deep vertical void.
- Kitchen: the fire element (agni), plus heat, smoke, water and daily clutter, in the space zone.
Staircase, lift or kitchen in Brahmasthan: at a glance
| Item in the centre | How Vastu usually reads it | Can you move it? | First no-demolition fixes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal staircase (duplex, villa, independent house) | Serious, especially on the exact centre | Only in a major rebuild | Bright lighting, open and clean under-stair area, light colours |
| Lift shaft or lift lobby (inside your unit) | Serious if exactly on the centre; next to it is widely accepted in flats | No | Keep the lobby clear and well lit; nothing heavy beside it |
| Building lift core (outside your flat) | Not part of your flat’s Brahmasthan | No | Analyse the centre of your own unit instead |
| Closed kitchen | Serious (fire in the space zone) | During a planned renovation | Light colours, strong ventilation, spotless counters |
| Open kitchen or kitchen island | Usually read as milder than a closed kitchen | Sometimes | Keep the stove off the exact centre where you can |
Step 1: Check whether it is really inside the Brahmasthan
Measure before you change anything; many families worry about a staircase that only touches the edge of the zone.
- Measure the outer length and breadth of your home (for a flat, your own unit, not the tower).
- Divide each side into three equal parts. The middle box is the Brahmasthan. L-shaped and irregular homes need an area-weighted centre, which our step-by-step guide to finding the centre of your house explains.
- Mark the staircase, lift or kitchen on the same sketch.
- Note how much of the box it covers, and whether it sits on the exact centre point or only on the edge.
Staircase in Brahmasthan: what it means and what to do
An internal staircase is the most common central defect in Indian duplexes, row houses and independent houses. Traditional Vastu prefers the staircase in the south, south-west or west, where its weight sits in the heavier zones. Our staircase Vastu guide covers the direction, rotation and number of steps, so here we focus only on the centre.
Fixes for an existing staircase
- Light it well. Add bright, warm lights on the landing and over the stairs. The centre should never be the darkest part of the house.
- Keep the space under the stairs open. In the centre, the best use of under-stair space is no use at all. Avoid a toilet, puja unit, store or junk corner there.
- Use light colours. Choose white, cream or light pastel walls and a light handrail. Avoid dark wood panelling around the centre.
- Keep it clean and clear. No shoes, bags, boxes or laundry on the steps or the landing.
If you are building or renovating
Plan the staircase out of the central box from the drawing stage, ideally in the south, south-west or west. If the plot is narrow and the stair must run near the middle, keep it against a side wall so the true centre stays open.

Lift in Brahmasthan: flats, towers and private homes
Your flat vs the whole tower
In a high-rise, the lift and stair core is often at the centre of the building. That core is part of the tower’s Brahmasthan, not yours. For your home, Vastu looks at the centre of your own unit.
When the lift lobby is inside your unit
In penthouses, duplex flats and houses with a private lift, the shaft or lobby can fall inside your own Brahmasthan. Traditional readings treat a shaft exactly on the centre much like a heavy obstruction. A lift beside the zone, rather than on it, is widely accepted, especially in flats.
- Keep the lift lobby clear of shoe racks, cupboards and stored items.
- Light the lobby well and use light wall colours.
Safety first: never alter a lift shaft, its walls or the lobby for Vastu reasons. Lifts and stair cores are governed by structural and fire-safety requirements. Speak to your society and a qualified engineer before any work near them.
Kitchen in Brahmasthan: fire in the space zone
Traditional Vastu prefers the kitchen in the south-east, the zone of Agni. A kitchen at the centre places fire, water and constant activity in the zone meant for openness. Our complete kitchen Vastu guide covers stove, sink and appliance placement; here is what matters for a central kitchen.
Open kitchen vs closed kitchen
Practitioners generally read an open, light kitchen at the centre as milder than a closed, dark kitchen with walls around it. The main concern is the stove itself, so where possible keep the cooking range off the exact centre point.
Fixes for a kitchen in the centre
- Light colours: cream, pale yellow or white walls and a light stone or quartz counter. Avoid strong red or black around the centre.
- Ventilation: a working chimney or exhaust fan, and open windows during and after cooking.
- Keep counters clear: store appliances and utensils away when not in use; no heaps of vessels or grocery bags.
- Plan the big change for a renovation: if you renovate, move the cooking range towards the south-east. Gas lines and electrical points must be moved only by a qualified plumber, electrician or your gas agency.
Worked example: a 30 × 45 ft duplex with a central staircase
Take a ground floor of 30 × 45 ft, a size you will find in many Indian duplexes and row houses.
- Brahmasthan box: divide 30 ft into three (10 ft each) and 45 ft into three (15 ft each). The box is 10 × 15 ft, running from 10 to 20 ft across and 15 to 30 ft deep. That is 150 sq ft.
- Staircase: a dog-leg stair about 4 ft wide with a 12 ft run, placed from 13 to 17 ft across and 16 to 28 ft deep. It is fully inside the box and covers about 48 sq ft, roughly one-third of the Brahmasthan.
- What to do now: clear the under-stair space, add warm lights on the stair and landing, repaint the walls cream, and keep the remaining two-thirds of the box completely open.
- What to do in a future rebuild: shift the staircase towards the south-west or west wall so the central 150 sq ft stays open.
Do’s and don’ts
| Do | Don’t |
|---|---|
| Measure first and confirm the item is really inside the central box | Assume anything near the middle is a defect |
| Light the staircase, lift lobby or kitchen well | Leave the centre dark or closed |
| Keep the under-stair space open and clean | Build a toilet, puja unit or store under a central stair |
| Use light colours around the centre | Use dark panelling or heavy stone around it |
| Plan structural changes only during a renovation, with an engineer | Cut, shift or alter stairs, lift shafts or beams for Vastu |
| Move gas and electrical points only through qualified people | Shift gas lines yourself |
Frequently asked questions
Is a staircase on the edge of the Brahmasthan as bad as one in the middle?
No. Most practitioners treat a staircase on the exact centre point as more serious than one that only overlaps the edge of the central box. Measure first and see how much of the one-ninth zone it covers.
What can I keep under a staircase in the centre of the house?
Ideally nothing. Keep the under-stair space open, clean and well lit. Avoid a toilet, puja unit, storeroom or junk corner there. If you must use it, a small closed cabinet for light items is the usual compromise.
Does the lift core of my apartment tower affect my flat’s Brahmasthan?
Not directly. The tower’s lift core is the centre of the building, not of your flat. For your own home, Vastu looks at the centre of your unit.
Is an open kitchen at the centre better than a closed one?
Practitioners generally read an open, light and well-ventilated kitchen at the centre as milder than a closed, dark kitchen. In both cases, keep the stove off the exact centre where possible, use light colours, and keep counters clear and clean.
Should I shift my staircase or kitchen to fix the Brahmasthan?
Not as a first step. Start with lighting, open space, light colours and cleanliness. Moving a staircase or kitchen is a major structural, plumbing and gas job, so plan it only during a renovation, with a structural engineer and qualified tradespeople.
Seedhi Brahmasthan me ho to kya kare?
Tod-phod na karein. Seedhi ke neeche ki jagah khali aur saaf rakhein, seedhi aur landing par achhi roshni lagayein, aur deewaron par halke rang karwayein. Seedhi shift karna sirf renovation me, engineer ki salah se karein.
