Which Floor Is Good as per Vastu? Floor-by-Floor Guide

Quick answer: No floor is good or bad by itself in Vastu Shastra. Classical texts judge a home by direction, shape, entrance and the five elements, not by floor number. A flat on any floor works well when its entrance, kitchen, master bedroom and open North-East zone are placed correctly and it gets good morning light and cross-ventilation.

If you are booking a flat in a high-rise in Gurugram, Pune, Mohali or Bengaluru, you have probably heard advice like “never take the 7th floor”, “ground floor is best for Vastu” or “top floor brings money”. This guide separates what Vastu Shastra actually says from what is numerology, superstition or plain practicality, so you can choose a floor with confidence.

Does Vastu Shastra say which floor is best?

Not directly. Classical Vastu texts such as Manasara and Mayamata describe buildings with several storeys (bhumi) mainly in terms of proportion, height and the layout of the whole structure. They were written long before apartment towers and do not rank floor numbers for residents.

So when someone says “the 4th floor is inauspicious as per Vastu”, ask where that rule comes from. Usually it is one of three things:

  • Numerology: reducing the floor or flat number to a single digit and reading its planetary meaning.
  • Superstition or culture: for example, the Western fear of the number 13, which has no basis in Vastu.
  • Practical experience: heat on top floors, dampness on ground floors, lift dependence on high floors.

What matters more than the floor number?

The Vastu quality of a flat comes from the same factors on the 2nd floor or the 22nd. In order of importance:

  1. Main entrance direction and pada: where your flat’s door sits on its own boundary, not the tower’s gate.
  2. Shape of the flat: square or rectangular is ideal; a cut in the North-East or an extension in the South-West needs attention.
  3. Placement of key rooms: kitchen in the South-East (or North-West), master bedroom in the South-West, toilets away from the North-East and the centre.
  4. Brahmasthan (centre): kept open and clutter-free, without a toilet, pillar or staircase.
  5. Light and air: morning sun from the East and North-East, and cross-ventilation through opposite windows.
  6. Surroundings: taller buildings to the South and West are acceptable; heavy structures blocking the North and East are less ideal.

A 7th-floor flat with a North-East entrance, a South-West master bedroom and bright East windows is a stronger Vastu choice than a “lucky” 1st-floor flat with a toilet in the North-East.

Here is how each floor range compares on the factors Vastu cares about (light, air, earth contact, heaviness) plus everyday Indian living realities.

Floor range Vastu and element view Practical strengths Things to check
Ground floor Closest to the earth element (Prithvi); feels stable and grounded Easy for elders and children; private garden or lawn in some projects; no lift dependence Dampness, low light if shaded by trees or the tower, noise, privacy from the road
Low floors (1st–4th) Good balance of earth contact and light Stairs usable during power cuts; quick exit Neighbouring buildings blocking East or North light; parking and road noise
Middle floors (5th–12th) Usually the best mix of air (Vayu) and light (Agni) without extremes Better views and breeze; less dust and fewer mosquitoes in many cities Lift reliability and backup power; which side the flat faces in the tower
High floors (13th and above) Strong air and light; less earth contact Open views, more privacy, often brighter rooms Wind pressure on balconies, lift and power dependence, fire-safety equipment and evacuation plan
Top floor / penthouse Exposed to the sky element (Akash); roof load overhead matters Terrace access, maximum light Summer heat and seepage; overhead water tanks above the North-East of your flat are traditionally avoided

Is the 7th floor good as per Vastu?

Yes, a 7th-floor flat can be perfectly good as per Vastu. Vastu Shastra has no rule against the 7th floor or any other number. The worry usually comes from numerology, where 7 is linked with Ketu and read as a reflective, spiritual number rather than a materialistic one.

Even in numerology, many practitioners treat the flat number (for example 703) as more personal than the floor number, and they compare it with the resident’s own numbers rather than calling any single digit “bad”. If the flat’s layout is strong, a 7th-floor location is not a reason to reject it.

Floor number vs flat number: what numerology looks at

If you also want to follow numerology, the common method is to add the digits of the flat number until you get a single digit:

  • Flat 703 → 7 + 0 + 3 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
  • Flat 1204 → 1 + 2 + 0 + 4 = 7
  • Flat 301 → 3 + 0 + 1 = 4

The resulting number is then compared with your own Life Path or name number. A mismatch is usually handled with simple, non-structural steps such as a nameplate or colours, never by giving up a well-planned home. Our guide on house number numerology and Vastu explains the full method.

Which floor suits which family?

Vastu is about supporting the people who live in the home, so it helps to match the floor to your family’s stage of life. These are practical suggestions, not classical rules.

Your situation Floors that usually work well Why
Senior parents living with you Ground to 4th Less lift dependence, easier movement in emergencies
Young children Ground to middle floors Quick access to play areas; balcony safety is easier to manage
Work from home or study-heavy family Middle to high floors Better light and quieter rooms for focus
Frequent power cuts in your area Low floors Stairs are realistic when backup fails
Rental or investment flat Middle floors Broadest tenant appeal in most Indian cities

A worked example: two flats, two floors

Imagine a couple in Zirakpur comparing two flats in the same project:

  • Flat A, 3rd floor: South-West entrance, kitchen in the North-East, East windows partly blocked by the next tower.
  • Flat B, 9th floor: North-East entrance, kitchen in the South-East, master bedroom in the South-West, open East view.

Many buyers would pick Flat A because “lower is safer”. On Vastu factors, Flat B is clearly stronger: a better entrance zone, a correctly placed kitchen and bedroom, and full morning light. The floor number hardly enters the decision.

Checklist: how to judge any floor before booking

  • Take a compass reading inside the flat, away from metal and electronics, and note the true facing.
  • Mark the flat’s own entrance, kitchen, bedrooms and toilets on the floor plan.
  • Find the centre (Brahmasthan) and confirm it is not a toilet, pillar or staircase.
  • Visit at 8–9 am to see whether East and North-East rooms get direct morning light.
  • Open opposite windows and check for cross-ventilation.
  • Look at what lies outside each side: taller towers, water tanks, transformers, open land.
  • For high floors, confirm lift count, power backup and fire-safety arrangements with the builder.
  • For the top floor, ask where the overhead tanks and solar panels sit relative to your flat.
  • For the ground floor, check for seepage marks, drainage and how close the flat is to the road.

Do’s and don’ts when choosing a floor

Do

  • Judge the flat’s layout and entrance first; the floor number comes later.
  • Prefer flats with open North and East sides on whichever floor you choose.
  • Match the floor to your family: elders, children, work-from-home needs.
  • Check light and ventilation in person, at different times of the day. Our guide on sunlight and ventilation in Vastu explains why they matter so much.

Don’t

  • Don’t reject a well-planned flat only because of its floor number.
  • Don’t pay extra for a “lucky floor” if the layout has a toilet in the North-East or a cut South-West corner.
  • Don’t confuse the tower’s main gate with your flat’s entrance; Vastu reads your own door.
  • Don’t plan structural changes to “fix” a floor. If something needs correcting, start with Vastu remedies without demolition.

Simple remedies if you are uneasy about your floor

If you have already bought a flat and feel unsure about its floor, focus on the parts of the home you can influence:

  • Keep the North-East corner light, clean and uncluttered; a small water element or plants work well here.
  • Place heavier furniture and storage in the South-West to add stability, especially on high floors.
  • On the top floor, keep the roof area above the North-East clear of heavy junk.
  • On the ground floor, fix dampness promptly and use light, warm colours to brighten darker rooms.
  • If numerology matters to you, use a clear nameplate with the flat number and your family name at the entrance.

These steps are traditional, low-cost and non-destructive. They support a calmer, better-organised home; they are not a promise of any specific result.

Frequently asked questions

Which floor is best as per Vastu?

Vastu Shastra does not name a single best floor. Any floor can be good if the flat has a well-placed entrance, a South-East kitchen, a South-West master bedroom, an open North-East and good morning light. Many families find middle floors give the best balance of light, air and convenience.

Is the ground floor good as per Vastu?

Yes. The ground floor is closest to the earth element and suits families with elders or young children. Check for dampness, low light and road noise, and make sure the flat’s own layout follows Vastu basics.

Is the top floor good as per Vastu?

A top-floor flat can be good if its layout is sound. Watch for summer heat, seepage and the position of overhead water tanks; traditionally, heavy tanks above the North-East part of your home are avoided.

Is the 13th floor unlucky in Vastu?

No. Fear of the number 13 comes from Western superstition, not from Vastu Shastra. Some Indian builders skip the label “13” for marketing reasons, but Vastu judges the flat’s directions and layout, not the floor’s label.

Does Vastu apply to flats on high floors?

Yes. Directions do not change with height, so the same principles apply on the 25th floor as on the ground floor. What changes is the surroundings: on high floors, check wind, light and which taller buildings sit to each side.

Can I check my flat’s Vastu online?

Yes. The free VastuIQ Vastu Analyzer takes your property type, facing, entrance, floor and room directions and gives an instant Vastu score, with an optional detailed PDF report.

Choose the layout, then the floor

The floor you live on matters for comfort, safety and daily convenience, but Vastu Shastra measures a home by its directions, shape and the balance of the five elements. Get those right and the 3rd, 7th or 17th floor can all be happy homes.
